National 5G projects co-operate in showcasing the delivery of the Finnish broadcasting company Yle´s live TV channels in mobile wireless network. For the first time in Finland two areas are lit up, and selected commercial smartphones are enabled to receive live streams in Oulu and Espoo 5G test networks using evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) technology.
In June, Digita signed an agreement with Social Media Fab Oy to broadcast Internet TV channel for the first time on Digita’s terrestrial television. SoMeTV was launched on 15 June 2018 on Channel 19. The channel can be watched on HbbTVs connected to the Internet.
Hippos together with its collaboration partners will be showing daily trotting races on the Estradi channel on terrestrial TV network as an experiment in July. The broadcast on Estradi is the same one that Veikkaus broadcasts on TotoTV. Studio broadcasts will be on the air on Wednesdays and Saturdays – on other days the races will be broadcast live from the track. The broadcasts will start on 30 June with the Saturday races of the Suur-Hollola weekend. Ponsse Oyj, LocalTapiola, and Hevosurheilu magazine are sponsoring the broadcasts.
In recent years, Digita has invested heavily in developing new types of Hybrid TV services. Examples of applications enabled by Hybrid broadcast broadband TV (HbbTV) technology include a voting feature for music programmes in the autumn of 2017 and spring of 2018. The number of Hybrid TV devices has grown strongly among Finnish television viewers. Over 350,000 television sets now enable the active use of Hybrid TV services, which is over 2.5 times higher than the year before. Hybrid TV services are currently available over Digita's Antenna TV network, and via Telia's cable-TV service.
Fortum will begin using Digita's nationwide IoT network, based on LoRaWAN technology, in its SmartLiving services.
